Training
The following is a brief overview of the training provided in order for
you to obtain the qualifications/rating of your choice.

PPL (Private Pilots Licence)
IMC (Instrument Meteorological Conditions) Rating
Night Qualification
NPPL (National Private Pilots Licence)

The Private Pilots Licence (PPL)

The course involves 45 hours of flight time as pilot of aeroplanes
 

The flying training involves:

25 hours - Dual instruction on aeroplanes
10 hours - Supervised solo flight time on aeroplanes must include
 5 Hours - Solo Cross-country flight.
 
 
Within these 5 hours, one Cross-country flight of at least 150nm(270km),
during which full stop landings at two different aerodromes different from
the aerodrome of departure shall be made as per the requirements of
licence issuing authority.
You will also be required to pass theoretical knowledge examinations in
the following subjects:

 

1. Aviation Law & Operational Procedures
2. Human Performance & Limitations
3. Navigation & Radio Aids


4. Meteorology
5. Aircraft (General) & Principles of Flight
6. Flight Performance & Planning
7. JAR-FCL Communications (PPL)

 
These examinations contain multiple-choice questions for the most part
and are normally conducted at the flying club.

The Instrument Meteorological Conditions Rating (IMC)

An Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC) Rating extends the
privileges of a PPL(A) holder to allow flight as Pilot-in-Command when
out of sight of the surface, when in IMC conditions, and, in class D or E
airspace in circumstances which require compliance with Instrument
Flight Rules (IFR).
The minimum course requirements include fifteen (15) hours training in
instrument flying. A minimum of ten (10) of the hours shall be flown by
sole reference to instruments alone. Following this approved course,
the student is allowed to sit the written theoretical ground examination
and to take the flight test. Before an application for the rating can be
submitted, the applicant must have twenty five (25) hours experience
as a pilot since the date of application for their PPL(A). This shall include
ten (10) hours as PIC, of which at least five (5) hours must be on
cross-country flights The rating is valid for a period of twenty five (25)
months from the date of the flight test.

Night Qualification

If the privileges of the Private Pilots licence are to be exercised at night,
a Night Qualification will be endorsed on a JAR licence.

The training requirements are as follows:

A course of a minimum of five (5) hours flight time in aeroplanes shall be
completed at night comprising of three (3) hours of dual instruction
including at least one (1) hour of cross-country navigation and five (5)
solo take-offs and five (5) solo full-stop landings. This training may be
carried out as part of the PPL(A) course requirements. The course does
not require any theoretical or flight examination to be completed for the
issue of the rating.

National Private Pilots Licence (NPPL)

The approved course at Cambrian Flying Club is laid out in accordance
with CAA requirements.
The course is intended to train an applicant to fly any simple single-engine
aeroplane with a maximum all up weight of 5700 kgs. The licence allows the
holder to fly solely within United Kingdom airspace and they may only carry
up to a maximum of 3 passengers.
The flight instruction is a minimum of thirty-two (32) hours of flight training,
of which a minimum of twenty two (22) hours shall be dual flight instruction
including 1 hour of instrument appreciation. In addition the applicant will have completed a minimum of ten (10) hours solo flying. The Navigation Skill Test
and General Skill Test are additional to the course training requirements.
An applicant will possess a current medical 'certificate of fitness' from their
General Practitioner (GP), which is equivalent to the DVLA Group 2 professional driving standard medical.
