BALLOON BURSTING & BBQ EVENT Our annual Balloon Bursting Event held at Pembrey was a great success. Qualified pilots, visiting pilots and student pilots all took part chasing helium filled balloons, trying to burst one with the propeller. Many tried, many failed, but all enjoyed the chase............. Certificates were presented to those who were successful and those who took part. We had a good crowd of spectators who encouraged the pilots and enjoyed the show. A great Barbeque was provided by the Amelia Restaurant and the threatening rain stayed off until the end of the event. Our next Balloon Burtsting event will be held around Easter next year. |

KILKENNY TRIP The trip to Kilkenny had to be cancelled due to bad weather, but a few days later on Bank Holiday Monday the weather had improved greatly and members flew out on a day trip there. Very strong winds from the west gave us a flight time of 2 hours out-bound and the tailwind meant the flight time back to Pembrey from Kilkenny was just 1 hour 15 minutes. We received a typically friendly Irish welcome from the owner of Kilkenny airport, who organised a taxi to take us to town, and recommended a local restaurant where we had an excellent and filling meal of traditional Irish stew. A trip around this beautiful medieval city on an open-topped tourist bus was enjoyed by all. Another overnight trip is planned to Kilkenny before the end of the year. SCILLY ISLES PHOTOGRAPHS Some of the great photo's taken on a recent Club Fly-out to the Scilly Isles. The Scilly's have now become one of our regular and favourite fly-out destinations. |

Another trip is planned later in the year, to this unique and beautiful archipelago just 28 miles south west of Land's End off the rugged Cornish coast. |

FLY-OUT TO CHANNEL ISLANDS AND BRITTANY Members of the club enjoyed a great fly-out to Guernsey and Brittany in July. Flying out of Pembrey they had lunch on Guernsey then flew on to Dinard in France to clear customs. They spent two nights in beautiful, sunny, Dinan. Those who went on the same trip in February, were very impressed with picturesque Dinan, despite the weather. This time, the weather did us proud. On the return leg, they flew out of Dinard, lunching on Jersey this time, then back home to Pembrey. The trip was enjoyed by everyone, and we will certainly be doing this destination again soon. |

Club Member Eric has been hitting the headlines once again. After his recent appearance on BBC Wales Today and his radio interview on BBC Radio Wales he has now been featured in Today’s Pilot Magazine NEVER TOO OLD Retired head teacher Eric Lamborn has proved you’re never too old to learn. At 79 he’s just qualified for his PPL. Eric from Port Talbot, is no stranger to flying, however, having originally earned his ‘wings’ with the RAF Reserves. His love of flying was fostered in 1943 when he trained as a teacher at Trinity College, Carmarthen and became a member of the University’s Air Squadron, flying Tiger Moths out of Pembrey Airfield, and later piloting Spitfires and early jets. Things have changed quite a bit since then, he says, “In the old days it was ‘light the fires, kick the tyres and buzz off’. You had a map and flew along railway lines and if you got lost, you came down to look at the names of the stations. It’s more complicated these days. In our day you didn’t have GPS!” Eric gained his PPL back at Pembrey, where he is a member of Cambrian Flying Club. He has a part-share in an aircraft based there. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CLUB AWARDS DINNER The Club Awards Dinner held on Friday 7th April at the Ashburnham Hotel, Burry Port, was a great success, with 74 members and guests attending the event. Presentations were made to members who have achieved their PPL's during the year and those who had gone solo for the first time. Highligh of the evening was a presentation by Squadron Leader Guy Jeffs from RAF Pembrey Sands, who spoke of the operations at the bombing range and showed some exciting video clips of bombing runs from the cockpit view. Malcolm Boorer showed a video he had taken on club trips to France, the Channel Islelands and the Isles of Scilly.
