KILKENNY - IRELAND

The last planned  trip to Kilkenny had to be cancelled due to bad weather, but members flew out on a day trip there.  We received a typically friendly Irish welcome from the owner of Kilkenny airport, who organised a taxi to take us to town, and recommended a local restaurant where we had an excellent and filling meal of traditional Irish stew.  A trip around this beautiful medieval city on an open-topped tourist bus was enjoyed by all.

Another overnight trip is planned to Kilkenny before the end of the year.

Kilkenny is situated inland in the 'sunny south-east' of Ireland,  known as the medieval capital of Ireland it has been a market town since at least the fourth century. It is steeped in history and bears the marks of Celtic, Viking, Norman and English invaders.

Today, it combines the intimacy of a large village with the attractions of a bustling entertainment and craft-orientated city.

The pubs are a major source of entertainment in Kilkenny.

The choice is wide ranging from traditional Irish bars, unchanged

for a century, to modern "super pubs" Many serve food and there is a

vibrant lunchtime trade where an average pub lunch will cost between

£5 - £8. The tradition of Irish pub-culture (conversation, music and story-telling)

is alive and well in Kilkenny

CHANNEL ISLANDS AND FRANCE

xml:namespace prefix = o />Members of the club enjoyed a great fly-out to Guernsey and Brittany in July.  Flying out of Pembrey they had lunch on Guernsey then flew to Dinard in France to clear customs and then spent two nights in beautiful sunny Dinan.   Those who went on the same trip in February were very impressed with picturesque Dinan despite the weather. This time the weather did us proud.  On the return leg, we flew out of Dinard, lunching on Jersey this time, then back home to Pembrey.  The trip was enjoyed by everyone, and we will certainly be doing this destination again soon.
